Ibn Khaldun was born in 1332 in Tunis, in what is now Tunisia. He came from a family with a long tradition of scholarship and public service.

Throughout his life, he worked in a variety of political and scholarly positions across North Africa and the wider Islamic world.

His experiences with political instability, changing dynasties and different societies gave him a broad perspective on the forces that shape human communities.

These observations eventually became the basis for his influential study of history, society and civilization.

Ibn Khaldun died in Cairo in 1406 after spending his later years teaching and serving as a judge.
