Marco Polo was born in or around 1254 in the Republic of Venice. He came from a family involved in long-distance trade and commerce.

In the 1270s, Marco travelled eastward with his father Niccolò Polo and uncle Maffeo Polo. Their journey took them through regions of the Middle East and Central Asia.

The Polos eventually reached the territories controlled by Kublai Khan, the powerful Mongol ruler of China and the wider Mongol Empire.

Marco Polo remained in Asia for many years according to his account, describing cities, customs, trade, government and landscapes that were unfamiliar to many European readers.

His journey became one of the most influential travel stories associated with the medieval Silk Road.
