Mehmed II was born in 1432 in Edirne, then one of the principal centers of the Ottoman state. He was the son of Sultan Murad II.

Mehmed first became sultan at a young age in 1444. Political and military difficulties soon led his father to resume the throne. Mehmed returned to power in 1451 following Murad II's death.

From the beginning of his second reign, Mehmed focused on strengthening Ottoman military power and preparing for the conquest of Constantinople.

PREPARATION

Preparing the Siege

Mehmed constructed Rumeli Hisarı on the European shore of the Bosporus to strengthen Ottoman control over the strait and restrict assistance reaching Constantinople.

SIEGE

The Ottoman Assault

Ottoman forces surrounded Constantinople in April 1453. Large artillery pieces played an important role during the prolonged siege.

The City Falls

After weeks of siege, Ottoman forces entered Constantinople on 29 May 1453, bringing the Byzantine Empire to an end.

Constantinople Under Mehmed

Following the conquest, Mehmed II made Constantinople the principal capital of the Ottoman Empire.

He encouraged the restoration and repopulation of the city, which had suffered from centuries of political and economic decline.

Different religious communities were incorporated into the developing Ottoman imperial system, while the city gradually became one of the most important political and commercial centers of the empire.

Mehmed also began major architectural projects that transformed the city's skyline and helped establish the foundations of Ottoman Istanbul.

Mehmed II recognized the growing importance of gunpowder weapons and heavy artillery in siege warfare.

During the siege of Constantinople, enormous cannons were used alongside traditional siege equipment, naval forces and large infantry formations.
