Mesopotamia refers broadly to the region lying between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Its fertile plains supported agriculture and helped communities grow into increasingly complex settlements.
In southern Mesopotamia, the Sumerians established some of the world's earliest known cities. Urban centers developed systems of administration, religious institutions, craft production and long-distance exchange.
Over centuries, different peoples and kingdoms controlled parts of the region, creating a long historical tradition rather than a single continuous Mesopotamian empire.
