Raja Raja Chola I was born as Arulmozhi Varman, a member of the Chola royal family. He belonged to a dynasty that had been rebuilding its power in southern India.

He became ruler of the Chola kingdom in approximately 985 CE. During his reign, he reorganized the kingdom's administration and pursued an ambitious programme of military expansion.

His reign marked a major turning point in Chola history. The Chola state developed into a large and well-organized empire with influence across much of southern India.

Brihadisvara Temple

The monumental temple was constructed during his reign and became one of the finest examples of Chola architecture.

Its enormous vimana, detailed stone sculptures, inscriptions and carefully planned complex demonstrate the extraordinary artistic and engineering achievements of the Chola period.

The monument is now part of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples and remains one of the most important surviving monuments of medieval South India.

Temple Culture & Shaivism

Raja Raja was a prominent patron of Shaivism, and temple institutions played an important role during his reign.
