The Life of Zheng He

From the Ming court to the Indian Ocean

✦ ✦ ✦

Zheng He was born around 1371 in Yunnan, China, into a Muslim family. His birth name was Ma He. During the conflicts surrounding the Ming conquest of Yunnan, he was captured as a young boy and later entered the service of the Ming court.

He eventually became a trusted official of the Yongle Emperor. His abilities and loyalty helped him rise to a position of considerable influence within the imperial administration.

Beginning in 1405, Zheng He was appointed to lead a series of major naval expeditions. These voyages travelled through the South China Sea and across the Indian Ocean.

The expeditions visited numerous ports and kingdoms, establishing diplomatic relationships, conducting trade and demonstrating the power of the Ming court.

Zheng He's voyages continued for almost three decades, making him one of the most notable maritime figures of the medieval world.

The Treasure Voyages

Maritime expeditions connecting distant regions

✦ ✦ ✦

Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He led seven major expeditions on behalf of the Ming dynasty.

The fleets sailed through Southeast Asia, across the Indian Ocean and toward the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa.

The voyages were not simply exploratory journeys. They served diplomatic, political and commercial purposes and formed part of the Ming court's international relations.

Envoys from foreign kingdoms sometimes travelled back to China with the fleet, where they were received by the Ming court.

The expeditions also brought foreign goods, animals and cultural knowledge to China, while strengthening China's connections with maritime trading networks.

Across the Maritime World

Zheng He's fleets visited ports along the coasts of India, Sri Lanka, Arabia and East Africa.

These voyages connected the Ming court with established Indian Ocean trading networks that had linked Africa, Arabia, India and Southeast Asia for centuries.

Diplomatic missions, trade and exchanges of gifts played an important role in these encounters.

After the final expedition, large-scale state-sponsored voyages of this type declined. The historical record of Zheng He's expeditions nevertheless continued to influence discussions of Chinese maritime history.
